Transitional Kindergarten - Requirements

California Education Code (EC 48000(g)) states that a school district or charter school shall ensure that credentialed teachers who are first assigned to a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom after July 1, 2015, have, by August 1, 2020, one of the following:

  1. At least 24 units in early childhood education (ECE), child development, or both;
  2. As determined by the Local Educational Agency employing a teacher, professional experience in a classroomsetting with preschool age children that is comparable to the 24 units of education described in paragraph (1); or
  3. A Child Development Teacher permit issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

*Regional accrediting institutions:

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA)/Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)

The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) (formerly Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges or NASC)

Higher Learning Commission (HLC) (formerly North Central Association of Colleges and Schools or NCA)

New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) (formerly New England Association of Schools and Colleges or NEASC-CIHE)

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC)

Western Association of Schools and Colleges/Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC)

*The CTC can only accept course work and degrees that were completed at a regionally accredited institutions. Degrees and course work must have been completed while the institution was regionally accredited in order for the Commission to consider them for credentialing purposes. Course work completed in other states is acceptable as long as the institution holds regional accreditation through one of the accrediting bodies listed below.
