9/29 Now that most classrooms are full of devices, it is a great time build the habit of making sure classroom doors are locked and secure whenever you are not in the room. Consider appointing a student monitor/ class job if need be. Have students use any app to create a Digital Citizenship Pledge and share it with the class in Edmodo.

10/13 Add a password to your Reflector to prevent students in other classes from hijacking your screen. Right-click on the Reflector icon in your tray, choose "Set Preferences" and then select "Password". You can share this password with your whole class, or manually enter it from the student's iPad when you'd like them to reflect. Practicing Prepositions with iPad cameras!

10/20 Frequently have students check to make sure their "Airplay" is off. When Airplay is on, they can drop items directly to each other or you. This can be helpful, however it drains battery, wifi, and can be a temptation for misuse. When doing spot checks of camera rolls/ photos, also make sure students have Airplay turned off by swiping up from he bottom like you do to activate your reflector. Airplay should be off unless you invite the students to turn it on for a school-related reason. Then turn off again when finished. Gumdrop Bridge building

11/3 Students all have an "Exchange" username and password for OneDrive, Word, email, etc. From time to time their devices will prompt them to re-enter it. Their username is: lunch#@santeesd.net, Password is the same as dreambox but with a CAPITAL first letter. This same combination also works for students to login to their Safari Montage accounts, which are now ready for use. Have students use the "Numbers" app to create simple, beautiful graphs and charts for any type of data! Select create a new spreadsheet, then get started in "Charting Basics".

11/10 Students forgetting their edmodo username and password? From a Laptop, teachers can look up their students' usernames by clicking on their group name, then "members". All of the students' usernames are listed in this section. Student passwords are not visible to the teacher, but teachers can change/ reset them by clicking "manage" next to the student's name, and selecting "Change Password". We recommend using their dreambox password if you reset. Using Popplet for number exploration

11/17 Many of the apps on the iPad include a voice recording feature. Students can use the microphone to record their voices, increasing fluency while practicing reading passages aloud to their device. Students can then choose their best recording to share with the teacher, parents, or with peers. They can also extend the reading activity by having illustrating their reading passage with the other tools available in the app. Ideal apps include Pixie, Explain Everything, and Notability, all of which have voice recording capability as well as drawing and image tools. Edmodo Backpack and Library:

Your Edmodo Backpack is like a virtual flash drive that works similarly to the Teacher Library. As a student, you can store an unlimited amount of files/links here and link your Google Drive to your Backpack. You can attach items from your Backpack to Posts or Assignments. There is a 100 MB per upload limit, but the overall storage available is unlimited.

12/8 When Microsoft updated your email, many of the email reply buttons defaulted to "Reply All" instead of "Reply". "Reply All" sends your response to everyone who was included in the original message, so if your principal or secretary sends an email to the whole staff, and you are replying directly to them, check to make sure that you manually select "Reply" unless you want your replies to be seen by everyone in the original email.

1/5 Achieve 3000 allows students to search for content by title or topic, an many teachers enjoy letting their students have some choice in what they read each week. However, the student search function is limited to Achieve's grade level filters. You as the teacher, on the other hand, can search any article/ topic and assign it to your students, even if Achieve has "flagged" it for another grade level. This is particularly handy for combo teachers who want all students to read the same article. Even when you assign an article, it will be delivered to the student at their independent lexile. Use Popplet to make timelines!

"Airdrop" should remain off on student iPads unless the teacher has directed students to send something.

You can see whose Airdrop is on at any time by tapping on photos on your teacher iPad. Next, choose and tap on any photo. Then, choose the blue box with the arrow up in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Airdrop will appear in the middle of the screen and the names of students who have Airdrop turned on and in range will appear. You can use this to remind those students that Airdrop should be off. Keeping it on adds temptation for mischief, drains battery, and uses wifi signal.

1/18 If a student turns off their Microphone or camera access in an app inadvertently, you can turn it back on for them by going to settings and scrolling down along the left hand side until you find the app in question. Tap on the app in the left hand column. The right-hand side of the screen will then display the setting for the app and you can swipe camera, microphone, etc. back on for the student. ALL iPads (Teachers and students) need to be updated to 9.2.1 ASAP. This is critical for the success of the apps moving forward with IT's app fix.

All of the recently rolled out K-1 iPads should be OK, however K-1 teachers should check their teacher iPads and update.

2-8 teachers: With your students as a group, tell students to go to Settings> General> About and check that their "version" is 9.2.1. (2nd grade: tell students this is a special exception to the "no settings" rule and it's OK because you are helping them)

If you are NOT on 9.2.1, go to Settings> General> About and click "Software Update". You will then need to follow 2 steps, Download, AND Install. This takes about 10-20 minutes. Please encourage students who take iPads home to do it at home. Ask a CRT, or a buddy teacher for help if you need it!

2/29 Google has released a kid-friendly search engine called Kiddle. Students can access it by going to kiddle.co.

The iPad apps have tons of potential to stand-in for, or augment some of your most cherished projects and learning objectives. The kids love exploring the apps and becoming experts. Next time you assign a project to students, consider letting them choose an app to show what they know. Explain Everything, Popplet, Pixie, Notability, and Book Creator are tremendously flexible and media-rich apps that allow students to engage and express themselves. We've linked a great rubric in the column to the right to spark your next learning adventure!

Edit your website from your laptop, NOT your iPad. Attempting to edit in schoolwires from an iPad will most likely corrupt your pages and data may be lost. The safest, most efficient bet is to always make changes, even simple updates to your home or assignment pages, from a laptop/ desktop.

Additionally, all content used as a class website should be housed in SchoolWires. IT and Admin have advised not to use your schoolwires page to link to another web host like weebly, wix, or google sites, as these are not protected under our content filters. If you have further questions on this, please contact IT.

5/3 If you have a new HP laptop, be on the lookout for the trackpad lock function. In the top left corner of your mouse trackpad, there is a tiny orange light that will illuminate if you accidentally lock the trackpad. Double- clicking the light will deactivate and make the trackpad fully functional again. Note: you must double tap ON the orange light, not just anywhere on the track pad.

If kids needing to have words spelled for them is detracting from projects or larger learning targets, consider turning on Siri and allowing kids to use it only for asking, "How do you spell_____?".

When asked to spell a word, Siri will pop up a box with the spelling, and audibly read the the spelling aloud to the student, which can save you valuable time and free you up to focus on the prioritized learning targets for that activity.

Be sure to set clear expectations about Siri's use and consider even having "Siri Spelling Time"- blocks of time when its OK to ask and times when its not. You could even have a visual cue on the board like a green or red "S".

Your students' iPads keep track of what websites they visit. This info can be found by going to Safari and clicking on the book just to the left of the address bar. Students should not be deleting or clearing their history. You may wish to instate a consequence for students whose iPads show a blank history, indicating that they have recently cleared it.

Some students may also be enabling "Private Browsing," meaning that they are technically blocking the iPad from keeping track of the sites they visit. They turn this on by clicking the double page icon all the way to the top right in Safari, then choosing "Private." When a student is in "Private Browsing" mode, a thick gray bar appears across the top of the browser screen. If you notice this bar while checking in on students' iPads, please remind the student that they are not to be using private browsing, and guide them in turning it off.

5/17 During testing, make sure you plug in the peripherals (headphones and keyboards) before launching the Secure Browser window. If a keyboard isn't working, try flipping the plug to the other side or switching it with a different keyboard. Oddly enough, these tricks seem to work most of the time. Wordhippo.com is a great place for students to explore vocabulary. It provides antonyms, synonyms, context, pronunciation, definitions and more. On a laptop or desktop, there are ads, but on student iPads, all adds are blocked :)
