Types of Problems K-4

Types of Problems

Students need to be exposed to many different types of problems, with the unknown in various positions. Too often we rely on problems with the result unknown (2+4=__), and students become confused when faced with the unknown in a different position (2+__=6, __+4=6, 6=4+__). This can also lead to the misconception that the equal sign means the answer is coming next, rather than representing equality or balance between one side of the equation and the other. The links below show the different types of problems to be introduced and worked with in each grade level, K-4. These can all be found in the Frameworks with greater explanation. Fifth grade should continue to work with all problem types.
